Introducing the New CDMA (AKA Verizon) iPhone 4! [Coming The First Week of February]

It is no doubt that rumors have been circulating the web for years now, that the iPhone would be coming to Verizon and I think I can safely say it will be nice to put these rumors to rest, once and for all. Once and for all? You might be thinking. Well, If you do not know what I am talking about, a few days ago I wrote about Verizon holding a special event that was going to be held (Tuesday, January 11…which is today). Now as this event was being held by Verizon, and the company invited several iPhone bloggers, it was expected that they would be announcing something related to Apple; more specifically the iPhone.

Now what did happen this morning? Well long and behold Verizon did in fact showcase the iPhone 4 CDMA edition (aka verizon iPhone) in this mornings Verizon iPhone event and this is how the vent unfolded…

To start this mornings’ event off, Lowell McAdam took the stage; which is Verizon’s COO, and after a few minutes of boasting about Verizon speedy network, he revealed the new CDMA iPhone 4. Stating that since 2008 Verizon had been talking more and more to Apple about bringing the iPhone to a CDMA network, and after testing the new CDMA iPhone this past year, Verizon is pleased to announce that the CDMA iPhone will be available to purchase in early February.

Now unfortunately this was about all the information we were given about the new CDMA iPhone 4. While Apple’s COO Tim Cook was also present during this presentation, he simply boasted the already known iPhone 4 features like facetime, an A4 Chip, Retina Display etc…The only real information we received was the CDMA iPhone’s release date, and how much it would cost to purchase one.

When will the CDMA iPhone 4 be released?

The CDMA (AKA Verizon) iPhone 4 is set for release on Febuary 3rd. If you are an existing verizon customers, you will be able to pre-order the iPhone 4 through Verizon. However, if you are not with Verizon, you will be able to purchase your CDMA iPhone 4 on On February 10th from Verizon or Apple, both online and in stores.

Will there be a big price difference between the CDMA iPhone and normal iPhone?

The answer is no. Just like the AT&T’s iPhone 4, the 16GB version will sell for $199, while the 32GB version will sell for $299.

CDMA… What does that mean?

Code division multiples access or CDMA for short is a channel access method used by some mobile phones (this is what Verizon’s network is based on). A CDMA iPhone simply means that its internal antenna is capable of using CDMA channels. Now as CDMA is considered to be a more outdated technology opposed to GSM, which is what the original iPhone is based on. This means that you will not be able to use data/use simultaneously… this is something Verizon customers will need to get used to.

As you can see, not much is known about the technical specifications on this new CDMA iPhone. While there are rumors going around that the new CDMA iPhone, contains a new antenna design to fix the deathgrip issue present in the original iPhone 4, we will not know for certain until it is released in early February. Until then… take a look at this handy iPhone comparison chart developed by Mashable.

Hopefully through reading this article, you have learned a little bit about what the Verizon iPhone is all about. Personally I will not be going out of my way to purchase one of these new CDMA iPhones, however I know for all of you who are disappointed with AT&T, you will give this new Verizon style iPhone a try. What are your thoughts on the new Verizon iPhone 4? Will you be purchasing one?
